The union of TRAM, an opportunity of progress for Barcelona

In 2010, a public consultation rejected the reform of the Diagonal Avenue, so the tram and the possible connection of the ends of the existing lines has been a recurrent issue of the political arena in Barcelona. Skilled technicians have conducted different studies including all possibilities, but nowadays the main obstacle is in discerning which the most appropriate route is: the necessary investment and possible changes in mobility of the city plan require a further reflection and consensus in the decision.

Nobody questions that the tram is one of the means of public transport with a higher rating by its users; therefore, the existing infrastructure in both sides of the main thoroughfare of Barcelona must join at some time. In this sense, the agreement is absolute, both from the operational point of view and from the promotion of a more sustainable mobility. From the air, it seems that the most sensible option is to follow the Diagonal line; the engineer Ildefons Cerdà already drew it when he gave shape to the Eixample quarter. However, not always the straight line is the shortest path between two points. Whatever it is, the discussion is open!

Two financial areas in a single hub

Anyway, it would be a great success that the tram could connect the 22@ district and the Forum area with Francesc Macià Square and the University area in a comfortable, direct and fast way. These are the two areas with the highest concentration of offices and hotels, the two natural entrances and exits of the city, the two main congress centers, many shopping centers… A short trip, stopping at Passeig de Gràcia, to cross the city from end to end and find your “soul mate”. By common sense, it would be a complete nonsense to miss out a unique opportunity to transform and improve Barcelona.
