Barcelona strengthens its knowledge hub in the Forum area
Gone are the days when the northern coastal part of the city of Barcelona was just a forgotten back room. The transformation that began in 2004 with the Forum of Cultures (hence the popular name that is currently given to the area) has not stopped. The new spaces and infrastructures created then have now acquired life and continue their development with new projects that, over the years, have been weaving a network of alliances for the benefit of the city.
The esplanade that hides a sewage treatment plant has become the best site for massive outdoor events. In Diagonal Mar, the park and the shopping center are the heart of the neighborhood’s life. The Port Forum welcomes future projects in its facilities (including the new Café del Mar). The activity continues to grow year after year in the CCIB as the feedback the center receives from its clients and delegates continue to improve. At once, the blue triangle building hosts a new museum dedicated to the study of natural sciences. And it is definitely science what is enshrined at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), the new “neighbor” of the Forum area.
The new UPC campus will receive 3.500 students daily
There is an evidence that results in research are better when the data is shared with complementary organizations. In Barcelona, this breeding ground has also been configured in the Forum area with knowledge as a connecting link. The nearby 22@ (which describes itself as “an innovative district offering modern spaces for the strategic focus of knowledge-intensive activities”), joined some time ago the CCIB and its more than 100 annual events, many of them worldwide medical congresses or leading technological events. Also the Museu Blau is a benchmark for the world of science. And now, the UPC comes on board.
With an investment of 100 M €, the new East Barcelona School of Engineering, inaugurated last September, will be and educational institution for 3,500 students and 500 teachers and researchers. The equipment aspires to become a magnet for talent, especially in the field of renewable energies, both in industrial and chemical engineering or materials. Biomedicine, nanotechnology, electronics… In total, 28 research groups will be installed in the Forum. With these, the area continues to strengthen its strategic value as a knowledge hub.
