Barcelona grew 15% in business tourism in 2015
Last year, the city hosted about 590.000 delegates from congresses, conventions and seminars, almost 2% more than the previous year. The total number of meeting was of 2.268.
The medical-scientific industry congregated almost half of the congresses and seminars held in 2015, a fact that guarantees its position as a knowledge hub, especially if we consider that telecommunications and technology are ranked in the second place.
The total number of delegates attending conferences, symposiums, courses, conventions and incentives in 2015 in Barcelona grew by 1,7% over the previous year, according to data from Turisme de Barcelona. However, the total number of meetings rose to 2.268, 15,2% more than in 2014.
The Spanish market gains importance
The annual report shows an increase of the strength of the Spanish market in the field of business tourism in Barcelona. In 2015, 93.929 delegates came from Spain, 3% more than the previous year. It also increased the number of Spanish organizations who run their conventions and incentives in the city. Among the 1.836 conventions and incentives held last year, 893 (48,6%) were organized by an Spanish company, a 72,1% more than in 2014.
With the audited data, it is worth noting two aspects. On one hand, Spain ranks fourth in the ranking by country of origin considering the organizer of the conference, preceded by U.S.A, Germany and UK and followed by France. On the other hand, the average stay in the city considering the delegates who participated in congresses, seminars, courses, conventions and incentives was 3,78 days.
For the period 2015-2021, the Catalan capital has already confirmed the celebration of 226 new congress.
